Next Saturday, CinemaKC presents the 11th Annual One Night Stand by the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City (IFCKC) on June 18 at theScreenland Armour

Next Saturday, CinemaKC presents the 11th Annual One Night Stand by the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City (IFCKC) on June 18 at theScreenland Armour Theater on 408 Armour Rd. in North Kansas City. The program includes a mixer at 6:30pm followed by the screenings and a Q&A with filmmakers starting at 7:30pm.

The One Night Stand filmmaking challenge is simple. Starting at 9:30 am on Saturday, June 18th, teams will have just ten hours to conceive, shoot and produce a short film, to be screened at 7:30pm that same evening. All of the teams are given a theme, a required line of dialogue, and a prop to use in the film. No production can be done prior to the event.

“It’s similar to most of the forty-eight hour competitions,” says IFC president Brian Boye, “except we did it first. The One Night Stand was one of the first timed competitions in the country. This will be our eleventh year, and it keeps getting better.”

Teams will have just 10 hours to write scripts, rehearse, shoot, and edit the short films. The final length of each story will be determined by the number of teams that enter the competition. The entry fee for teams is $30, and there is no limit to the number of teams or team members.

The One Night Stand has been one of the more successful fund-raising events for the IFCKC a 501(c)3 organization that works to help local independent filmmakers gain experience and learn more about the filmmaking process. Professionals, semi-pros, and hobbyists all participate in the organization’s events, and some have gone on to be successful professionals in the film industry. Admission will be $10 for IFCKC members, $15 for non-members.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Stephens College is accepting applications and portfolios for the Citizen Jane Film Scholarship, which will be awarded to five first-year filmmaking students

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Stephens College is accepting applications and portfolios for the Citizen Jane Film Scholarship, which will be awarded to five first-year filmmaking students at Stephens College beginning 2011. Portfolios and applications are due April 1, 2011.

The scholarship award is $5,000 per year for the freshman and sophomore year and includes a weeklong trip to Los Angeles at the end of their sophomore year. While in L.A., scholarship recipients will work side-by-side with industry professionals and have the opportunity to visit film studios, agents and casting directors to develop new networks and insights into the industry.

Scholarship recipients will also have one of their films screened at the 2011 Citizen Jane Film Festival and will be recognized as festival guest artists. The Citizen Jane Film Festival, hosted by Stephens College, the second-oldest women’s college in the nation, is an annual event created to support and celebrate some of the most daring, accomplished and interesting work by women filmmakers. The festival also exists to help carve strong, non-stereotypical roles for women in film, both in front of and behind the camera – especially crucial in light of the consistent and sore under-representation of women in powerful roles within the industry.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for talented young female filmmakers who are serious about getting a strong start to their career,” according to Kerri Yost, chair of the Stephens College Department of Film and Media. “Statistically, women are vastly underrepresented among Hollywood filmmakers, and this scholarship program will grant special access to this male-dominated industry.”

The Stephens College film program emphasizes a hands-on learning experience beginning the freshman year. Students work in teams to create narrative and documentary films. Internships are encouraged and students have access to a range of film and television industry connections.

For more details about the scholarship, Stephens College and the Citizen Jane Film Festival, visit www.stephens.edu/CJFilmscholarship

Stephens College, established in 1833, is historically committed to meeting the changing needs of women. Stephens prepares students to become leaders and innovators in a rapidly changing world, and engages lifelong learners in an educational experience characterized by intellectual rigor, creative expression and professional practice.

The Film Commission of Greater Kansas City and The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City have been hard at work on the development of a new way to support local filmmakers.

The KC Business Journal has more…

A nascent grant fund to support Kansas City filmmakers will bear the name of the local film scene’s favorite son.

The estate of Robert Altman, the late director of seminal films “Nashville” and “MASH,” agreed to lend the Kansas City native’s name to the Robert Altman Emerging Filmmakers Fund.

The fund, the first of its kind for local filmmakers, is the creation of the Film Commission of Greater Kansas City.

Backers seek to raise money from corporate sponsors and expect to begin offering grants next year. The goal is to make grants, in the range of $1,000 to $5,000, to help local directors produce projects in what is emerging as a growing sector of Kansas City’s art scene.

More on this exciting new fund as developments become available.

CinemaKC is a new Kansas City based organization whose mission is to help unify all of the various filmmaking organizations in the region to better serve our filmmakers and get more of their content in front of moviegoing audiences.

The KC Star shares one of the ways they’re making that connection…

At 9:30 p.m. on March 19, “CinemaKC” will debut on KSMO-TV, providing audiences with a glimpse into local moviemaking and giving filmmakers a showcase for their work.

The half-hour program is an effort of CinemaKC, founded last summer to serve as an umbrella organization for the local moviemaking and movie-loving community.

Initially each show in the 14-episode debut season will focus on the work of one filmmaker. One or more shorts will be aired, along with a brief on-camera interview with the homegrown auteur.

Among the area directors to be featured in the first season are Ty Jones, Patrick Rea and Anthony Ladesich.

So what can you do?

Watch the TV show. It’s important that this first season is a success so other seasons are possible.

Tell your friends on Facebook and other social channels. Especially if you’re very socially connected, this can build the type of buzz this show needs to hit critical mass.

Tell KSMO you love the show. The more TV stations hear from their viewers, the more likely they are to back the show and give it a better time slot, more promotion, etc.

Stay tuned for more news on this exciting development!
